I’m Jem and I’m the SEO & Content Manager at Fanbytes. I joined in September 2021, having worked in a fashion app startup and developed SEO for companies like Revolut and Peanut. I did an English degree and am a woman possessed when it comes to writing and editing. Grammar is my guilty pleasure, but so is data - I love being able to see the impact of writing and making strategic decisions.
Fig 1. I really do like typing.
Tell us 3 things you're responsible for in your role…
Managing SEO and content for Fanbytes means I’m thinking about how our content and website appears to Google and how it’s interpreted by our readers and potential partners. SEO-optimised content is often the first thing someone sees about your company, so everything has to look as good as the front page.
Strategy - I assess and plan for how to capture the best traffic from Google searches, and match this to our wider company plans and goals. I also strategise for user experience, creating content hierarchies and developing funnels to turn readers into leads.
I manage freelance writers. They create original copy which I edit and optimise for SEO, turning it into the articles you read. I also write myself - for our blog and for other sites to improve our link building.
I make technical recommendations and monitor the performance of webpages. I’m looking out for ways we can improve the content we already have, while identifying new opportunities to get our name out there.
What do you do outside of Fanbytes?
Ah I do have an answer for this but it’s the kind of hobby people then want evidence about! I’m a singer. I love opera especially. I’m lucky that over the pandemic I’ve been able to reconnect with my old opera teacher and have lessons on Zoom. My boyfriend always scarpers when I do this though - it’s very loud!
Aside from that, I guess I’m just quite sociable outside of work? I recently moved to Oxford so I am making up for lost time when I’m with my London friends (aren’t we all?) and getting stuck in with this new city. One of the best things about life here is the mix of countryside and town: I live near the centre, but it’s a 10-min walk for yoga in a meadow!
Fig 2. born performer.
Who is your favourite content creator?
Hard to pick! I love Andrea Cheong @andreacheong_ because I learn so much from her.
What advice would you give to someone applying to Fanbytes?
Go for it. Everyone at Fanbytes is quality - you’ll enjoy it, and you’ll be part of a team that’s doing great work!
